I was drawn to the idea of an evaporative cooler because air conditioning, whether central, window or portable, was not deemed appropriate for our homes. I thought about trying an evaporative cooler because I remembered a friend of mine who works in air conditioning and lives in Las Vegas used it to cool his garage. He told me how much cheaper it was to run than an air conditioner. Evaporative coolers work by blowing air through water, cooling and humidifying the air. The cooling properties are maintained as long as the water stays colder than the air. The good news is that you can change the water and/or ice pack as needed. It's great for hot and dry windy days when humidity drops to <12%. The main advantage over a portable room air conditioner is that we don't have to deal with exhaust fumes. Our only opening window in the bedroom was too small for even the smallest window air conditioner. I like the attractive modern design. The controls are easy to read, as is the remote control. The device contains a removable, cleanable air filter. Two freezing water tanks are included for easy rotation with gradual heating. For maximum cooling, use chilled water and a container of frozen water. The water tank offers easy access for filling and emptying. There are 3 fan speeds and a timer for 1, 2, 4 or 8 hours. The device is lightweight and easy to move, weighing only 12.4 lbs. Finally, it even oscillates, spreading its cooling properties that can be used with or without the use of a water element. In other words, you can use it as a fan if that's all you need for the moment. We were impressed by the fan's smooth running. I find the filling instructions to be overly cautious, prompting the user to unlock and remove the pump when removing and filling the reservoir. I find it much easier to partially pull out the tank and fill it by pouring water from a jug, eliminating the need to remove the pump entirely. I find this evaporative cooler to be a great option when air conditioning is not practical or desirable. I bought the 4 year extended warranty before I saw the tank's design. In hindsight, this was probably not necessary as a leak seems unlikely given the location and construction of the tank. The company also offered me to extend the factory warranty for another year (up to two years) if I register the cooler.
