A fatal mistake: shoulder bags

This is my first experience with Kipling bags. Overall happy with the build quality and the fabric, exterior and lining, both are much more solid than I expected. I've tried Syro, Erica and Aisling and will comment on all three. (I can't believe I just noticed this: not only do all bags have monkeys, but apparently all monkeys have names (on the Kipling fabric tag sewn into their arms). Shiro is Sara, Erika is Davina, and Aisling is Marley. Hmmm...) SYRO: Contrary to what I found in the descriptions, Syro's measurements are actually about 7 in height (zipper is under the top edge of the bag), 10-12 inches wide (sides curved). down in some) and the depth is 2 inches if you just measure the actual bottom panel, maximum about 4 inches if you factor in the creases that allow for expansion at the bottom (this of course takes up a fraction of the height of the bag). Both the front and back zip pockets reach to the floor, and the two side pockets are very roomy. The back zipper is 8.5 inches long so you can fit 8.5 x 11 paper folded in half into this bag - the front zipper is shorter so it doesn't go where it's crispy. My base Kindle Fire 4.75" x 7.5" fits in both. The front flap pocket measures about 5" x 8" with Velcro and has some depth for things to sit snugly - it's not big enough for the Fire. The interior zippered pocket is approximately 4.5 inches high and 7 inches wide with a full width zipper. 2 patch pockets are about 4.5 inches high; one about the right width for glasses or sunglasses and the other a little wider for...err, whatever. The central partition was about the full height (i.e. 7 inches) and the inside in equal parts. If I had saved the bag I would have removed the divider and I don't think that would have caused any problems. The size was a little smaller than I wanted but I would seriously consider keeping it because the pockets are almost perfect for my needs. However, the top zipper was a fatal flaw: the way it was inserted into the bag made it very difficult to start the zipper, even when holding the end with your other hand. After trying it 3-4 times I knew it was going to be a constant annoyance. Luuuvved gray color! ERIKA: I believe the measurements are 11 inches wide (plus zippered pockets at the end), 8 inches high and 5 inches deep (both top and bottom), all measurements seam-to-seam. Zippered back pocket, 6" deep (does not reach bottom of bag) and 9" wide with full zipper (holds only 8.5 x 11 paper folded in half). The 2 zippered front pockets are NOT lined, but the larger one (approx. 10" x 7" and actually touches the bottom of the bag) has a lightweight patch pocket panel (which seems to be in every Kipling bag somewhere - see size). for size). ) above). Smaller front zip pocket is larger than it looks in the pictures - approx. 4" x 5" End pockets are approx. 6" high x 4.5" wide and approx. 1/2" deep - small water bottle can stay in it, but I think the big one will fall out. 6.5" x 9" interior zip pocket with full zip closure. No slip panels inside the main interior compartment. The most surprising thing about Erica is the long two-way zip at the top , with which the main compartment can be opened completely. Almost impractical, however, are the large additional fabric "ears" on each side, into which the zipper is inserted. I ordered Erica in black with gray zippers. This, together with his Overall "chunkier" look, makes it more casual in my opinion. The strap is 1.5" wider than the 1" on the Syro and Aisling. It's a bit more than I'd like and I haven't made a decision on that yet. ( This is starting to sound like "Goldilocks and the 3 Bears"...) PASS: 3.75" deep at bottom, tapering to 0.75" at top, 9" high x 11" wide. A rear zip pocket runs along the bottom and sides of the bag. , about 6.5 inches tall with 9 inch zipper. The front flap pocket (Boo) is 9" wide and a modest 6" tall, but the flap sits 1.5" higher so something can protrude from the top of the bag and still be closed - and is 3/8" " deep - 1/2 inch interior zip pocket 6" high x 8" wide with full zip closure. And inside the standard panel with patch pockets. I don't like flap pockets (you have to keep them open when looking for something) but the size and number of pockets is good for this bag, overall it's about the right size, slim and neat enough...it'll be a keeper be if one is available. 3. I have it in Hummus, which is a nice medium khaki color.

Cons
  • There are disadvantages
