I have 4 cats. I have 3 separate living rooms in my house. All three have chairs and sofas whose backs and armrests are frayed and torn. All 4 cats LOVE shredding furniture no matter what method I use to curb their scratching. Tape on furniture, scented oils, plugs to calm a cat, and even your grandmother's flexible, clear plastic from the 1970s! Nothing helped even for a day. They either scratched the plastic or tape, or crawled under it and ripped open the underside, dragged their backs with claws and burrowed into the soft bottom of my furniture, or waited for the smell to become part of their learned environment and backed away to the furniture. Then one day, while I was on the Crazy Cat Girl chat group, lamenting my sadness at how embarrassed I was at being out of people, a lonely voice in the dark suggested these little cardboard nuggets of juicy awesomeness. Expensive? The sticker is shocking at first, but it indicates that not only are you turning all 3 sides, but then turning them upside down (the crampons hit the top to get the full stretch effect) so they really do last a lot longer than you do think. I have one on the edge of the furniture in every room (uninviting I know, but looks better than scraps of fabric and bare wood with cotton batting I'd say) and from the IMMEDIATE moment I put them on the cats stopped to use the furniture! I'm not joking. To prove how long they last I bought them in February and it's now October and I'm just starting to turn them upside down after turning all 3 sides. I've had flat boxes that you pay $6-10 for and they only last 2 months so I think it's a good deal. I've gotten the courage up after trying them on rat cat furniture for 3 months and spending money on Pottery Barn chairs and the cats haven't touched them YET. My friend at CCL said to treat catnip by rubbing every 3 or 4 days for the first 2 or 3 months instead of spraying every 3 or 4 days, but I forgot about it after a week and probably not for 3 months Added catnip. Before that I was like Pavlov. a dog pre-trained to make the noise. Cat claws scratching something made me scream STOP! Wherever I was in my house, I would let our Labrador (aka the policeman) run after an offended cat. It was also a learning experience for her. She had to teach the kittens to scratch. 😍
