I have a fairly small aquarium (advertised as 3.5 gallons, it isn't. I can only fill it with just over 2.5 gallons of water). It's a bit big and I never used a siphon before it took me a few tries to get the hang of it, mainly because I used the wrong end in the water to begin with. The thin end is the outlet and the end furthest from the blue light goes into your tank, just FYI. But once I read the instructions it worked really well. The siphon is designed more like a sieve - I could see sand or microscopic gravel being sucked into the pipe, but I had no problem with my regular sized gravel. This quickly drained the water and removed a lot of waste from the floor. It's not perfect, but I wasn't expecting it either - my fish was gifted to me by a white elephant and I had to earn the gear bit by bit. The daily water changes I do won't clear the bottom of nearly a month's worth of sludge, and I didn't expect a single siphon change to do that. I expect my betta will be a lot happier now that I can properly clean his tank and keep his nitrate levels down by disposing of waste.
