Do not buy! Bought a little over a year ago. Refused to pay $15 for iPhone apps but that was fine - only required outside on game day and in our practice room. Worked great until the end of the 14th football season. I used it last summer ('15) and was bombarded with ads. I had to install a plugin that would disable the ad-free interface I had before and insert ads on startup, as well as place banner ads on the right side of the screen and below. takes up a lot of space until you can expand it to full screen. which you can't do until you pass the first full screen ad. I've been looking into this with other owners of these devices, but two things happened today. 1. I read an interview with a CEO trying to justify a new business model, including commercials. Full of BS. This is not a free model. We pay hundreds for boxes. We pay to connect to the boxes (internet connection and cable), we pay for phone and tablet apps $15 each, which by the way is just insult to injury after spending hundreds of devices to make this even possible works, and if we choose free ones, they are full of ads and we look at ads placed in content on the channels, that we see. Most importantly, it was a new addition to reduce functionality. Products for at least one year after ownership. Imagine if you bought a new Audi last year and found out last Sunday that every time you go to your car to go to work and start it up, you're exposed to a 30-second ad that Not to be missed and must see . . . I understand the slingshot doesn't cost 45,000, but it's a premium product that you can use for free after the initial hardware cost. They just sold it to us. Post-inserting ads and forcing you to use their connection service instead of good old port forwarding straight to your IP address is just greed. Pop in a cuisinart for Audi if you have a big problem with that, and imagine sitting there for 30 seconds every time you want to grate a carrot. The commercials made me angry, but to make matters worse, I went to watch for a few minutes at the start of the show a few minutes ago and was forced to sit through a full 30-second John Hancock commercial β the , which showed an adult couple trying to persuade an elderly father to move in. I couldn't get past that. Not only will I never again buy a Sling product or anything that I know will go to any member of this management team in the face of bankruptcy, I will never use Hancock financial services. Serious. I'm not exaggerating. That's all companies seem to understand these days. I will never buy a Copeland Chevrolet Chevy truck during Truck Month. Whoever they are and wherever they are, and Elle Goulding Unstaged tonight at 8:00 p.m. EST on amexunstaged dot com? No thank you. Anyway, it's a fanboy and it's 11:31 AM EST - oh my - who creates your promotional content? In fact, the decision has been made to break these constant offers of pre-approval Amex cards that come in the mail much more easily. Yes these are all links to ads I saw when I typed this on another monitor. Believe positive reviews for this product and 3+ star ratings. Before I even bought mine I could have sworn that it had mediocre reviews due to its lack of facility-friendliness. I told myself I could fight and make it work, which I did. I've read reviews of poor performance, video skipping, and audio/video out of sync. Well said to me we have 100 less and 50 a little more. Should not be a problem. We've still had volatility issues from day one and I swear it looks like it.β The situation has worsened since the ads were pressed to our throats. Whether it's a feature of a plugin I had to install or the bandwidth used to serve ads I can't say for sure, but I've tried three browsers on Mac and PC and they all perform worse now , even if the variability continues connected to the internet, which previously allowed NORAD to run. We're also seeing an increase in problems playing national TV events as opposed to local content - not always with speed and movement like in games - contrary to claims that they're just using their internet. to shake the first hand. It also doesn't make sense why I see an ad every time I step over the remote when it's just doing the initial handshake. How does she or does she know if I'm pressing the remote when the handshake is all she's doing? ? intends to use their servers for? Something else is going on behind the scenes, using the bandwidth or sending it through their servers. And yes, I just said that every time when I move the mouse over the remote control or press it, an advertising banner appears at the bottom right. This is happening right now in Firefox 31.0, the most stable browser I've found to play with so far, and it definitely doesn't compare to Mozilla. It's just incredibly frustrating. The company takes a product that has proven to be excellent and decides to milk regular customers with outright blackmail. It was enough that they ended support for older models and forced people who bought their product to buy new ones just because they were forced to. But that was 5 years ago or so. This is 2015. I can stream my cable content to almost any device anywhere in the world I travel. A VCR too, which I couldn't do a year ago when I bought this particular Slingbox model. My guess is that Sling sees the writing on the wall and tries to cash in on their existing potential customer base before finally declaring bankruptcy and laying off their staff -- using this cash robbery to stuff some golden parachutes. I may be wrong but that is the taste I got from a recent interaction with this company, their gear and business practices. Beware of purchasing this or any other Sling product. Personally, I worry that I'll be left with a 200.00 door when they eventually go broke and shut down all the servers and infrastructure we now have to use to connect to devices, which we used to only be able to connect via the IP address. Serious. They don't have a good reputation as owners of older devices are forced to hang around with the introduction of new browsing methods. This company should be required by law to allow all of their devices to use a direct-connect browsing method that bypasses their infrastructure and works even if their server is unavailable if that ever happens, or for users who simply connect directly connect to devices they've already paid hundreds of dollars for and opt out of promotional content. What was available on previous Slingshot models. Sounds easy. Also, there's no HDMI support in this set-top box - I'm not sure about all of them, but I've read they will win. Don't pay for a standard HDMI license - might be misinformed but I've read that everywhere. You need to run composite in your box. Very late, just pressing the virtual remote control that's three rooms away from me via a sling connected to the included IR blaster.
