At first I didn't want the bowls to be used with an electric mixer, but for storage, serving and hand blending. These bowls are perfect for things like that! But if you're planning on using them with an electric hand mixer, I'm afraid even the largest ball will end up being undersized. They are suitable for mixing salads, marinating or mixing ingredients. Also, be aware that there's no non-slip rubber on the bottom, as one reviewer complained. This is china and I have never seen rubber inlays in a china bowl. I only believe in plastic bowls and didn't want to use plastic for serving or storing. In the manufacturer's specifications, they are described as non-slip because the raised edge of the bowl does not slip when lifted. When mixing or stirring by hand, place a towel over the bowl to keep it from sliding on the table. As a bonus, the tiny lid has a small dial in the center with numbers that you can use to indicate which day of the week you put the bowl in the fridge. I haven't seen this listed, but it's a very clever innovation, as is the hole in the center that allows air to escape, making the lids much easier to release. If I had a living elderly parent I would definitely buy this for her. I also think it's really good that you can see what's on the plate so you don't forget the leftovers. Overall a great quality set.
