I have an Ubuntu router at home that does the routing and hosts multiple servers. I recently switched to a gigabit connection and only saw about 500Mbps each way. I connected the router provided by the provider and got 1 Gbps in each direction. Well, since my build was mostly a toy, it used a built-in Realtek Ethernet port for LAN and a cheap Realtek single-port card for WAN. Hit this guy and he was recognized immediately, although he broke my router because the new interface naming system caused my old interfaces to be renamed. Disabled the old interfaces in my interfaces file and used the same settings but with the new interfaces. This card now houses both connectors, one for each Ethernet port. I kept my /etc/ directory for old interfaces and replaced them with new ones. Reboot and run like clockwork with an expected speed of 1Gbps.
