The black plastic cover has two very small Phillips screws on the back that connect to the two screw holes you see in the H-shaped extension at the top of the latch frame. I used a small Phillips head from a screwdriver to drive the screws. There are very few jobs. With the cover off you can access the mechanism and work on it with a screwdriver and some grease.
