I'll start with: 1. I'm using gold leaf for the FIRST TIME.2. I'm not very smart.3. I'm not very patient. In order for me to try it, it had to be reliable enough or I knew I was going to throw it out the window. Reading Revain reviews didn't really give me confidence, so I read some dodgy DIY blogs and hoped for the best. How did it end? Well it wasn't the best of times, it wasn't the worst of times. To be honest it was quite annoying and I made a lot of mistakes although the end result was more or less good. Honestly I'd pull my hair out, but I really didn't have my hands free since the thing is so troublesome and requires the concentration of pioneers. Here are some of my observations: a) What is the "easy" part of this sheet? Well, each sheet comes on a square of wax paper. You take wax paper, turn it over and then press gold leaf onto your surface. I believe that wax paper is a revolutionary innovation in the world of gold leaf. b) I knew that gold leaf is incredibly thin and would show bumps in the underlying surface, so I worried if the streaks would show up on the speedball glue. . Turns out I shouldn't have worried so much. The glue is quite thin (although it foams quite easily). So if you apply it carefully, you won't see any streaks. c) you know how everyone says that there will be a mess but you have no idea how much mess? Well I'm a few weeks later and I'm still finding gold flakes all over the house. You have to polish it, that's it which doesn't come into contact with glue, just crumbles and flies away. You can vacuum the cereal, but even just getting out of your chair and turning on the vacuum is like being in a snow globe. Here's where it all collapsed for me: a) You need to fold the gold leaf onto the glue ---- then DO NOTHING UNTIL IT'S DRY. Believe me, I learned this the hard way. Don't try to polish things right away. You need to let this sucker sit on the extra glue until it dries. If you overdo it will the glue somehow stick to the gold leaf - maybe it will seep through, or maybe my whole world was so covered in sticky glue at that moment that I was doomed. Who knows? But for God's sake don't touch it until it's permanently cemented. You can then sand off excess to your heart's content. b) Did you know that each side of gold leaf is different? No, me too. I also learned it the hard way. One side is shinier and the other side is duller. Something like a roll of aluminum foil in the kitchen. Ideally, you can always get the right side down since you're holding it by the wax paper. Except you always end up with huge bits that are still usable but have come loose from the wax paper. What now? How do you know which side is correct? Answer: no. c) This material will begin to fade immediately. This isn't surprising since the packaging says you need to cover this stuff with some kind of clear coat or spray. But if you have oily skin or clammy hands (I must be half gecko), expect fingerprints all over it. Which brings me to my latest failure. d) Do not try to erase these fingerprints too vigorously. Why? Because you will erase this golden sheet immediately, even if it dries. Found it out the hard way too. It scrapes off instantly even if you buff your casts with only the softest of rags. Bottom line: If you're like me, you're not that smart - it can be done. But don't expect it to be fun, fast, or reliable. It's terribly annoying. But doable.
