This is ideal for people who are not professionals but need sharper knives. I decided to shoot my knives one last time before dropping them. The stone did a great job restoring the blades to their original quality. Sharpening knives takes practice and a lot of time. The 1000/6000 stone is a great entry stone for practice. Soon I will be looking for a coarser and smoother grit to get the blades how I want them. For those who only use blades for cooking, a 1k/6k stone will do. The base is perfect and doesn't slip on my granite countertops. It is necessary to soak the stone and have extra water on hand to keep the stone moist. The angled guide glides well but gets in the way when you get close to the blade tip. I have found that using the thumbs as a guide works better and gives a natural feel. you wouldn't mind screwing it up.
