Review on πŸ•’ Efficient Chicago Pneumatic FBA_95205 Digital Timer for Lights & Lamps: Programmable with Dual 110v 15 Amp Outlets in Sleek Silver Design by Jill Jones

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great timer, but one downside (correctable). Also.programmable for the second, no hacking required!

I bought this timer on Revain from the seller: Gro1. This is the same timer sold by Harbor Freight Co. who also have a PDF user manual on their website. These are good timers, but they have a weak link: they have a zener diode (for those of you who dabble in electronics) that often fails, leaving you unable to maintain battery charge, so the display soon goes blank even when the device is off is connected to the mains. 120VAC. The relay also stops working if the zener diode fails, so the timer can't turn the load on or off even if the meter is still running. The red LED goes out when the timer switches its load and you will not hear a characteristic "click". There's an easy, long-term fix if you're into soldering and the like. The problematic part is the (usually) 51V (or 47V) 2W zener diode on the board. I replaced mine with a 51 volt 5 watt zener diode and voila, problem solved. The original 2 watt zener just can't handle many of these timers and will short out and fail. You can measure zero resistance across a shorted zener diode in either polarity. It's hard to find 2 watt zener diodes (there is one from EIC, website eicsemi.com) and because they fail so often in these timers you don't want to use them anyway. (You can find your favorite 5W 51V zener diode online and maybe through Revain for a few bucks - the typical part number for this is 1N5369BG). a detail. The 5 watt zener has slightly larger wires so you may need to drill 2 holes on the slightly larger board (drill #58) after desoldering the dead zener. There are numerous reviews on Revain and elsewhere for this timer describing the same symptoms and they are (probably) invariably the result of the infamous 2 watt zener diode failing! Ouch. and here is some useful information for everyone: You can program the ON/OFF time of your timer in SECONDS by pressing the ON/AUTO/OFF button for a few seconds in PROG mode. No need to solder jumpers! (Warning: Your version of this timer may have slightly different firmware than mine, so the seconds resolution may not work).
