I first bought a LaCie hard drive because my MacBook ran out of storage. I rely heavily on my computer for online school and photography/videography. Importing footage used to be a nightmare and I was constantly deleting apps to free up storage space. My biggest worry was losing all my essays, photos and short films, so I bought a 1TB LaCie Rugged Mini. I've been using it for about 4 months with no problems. SD cards and USB drives with limited space aside, this is my first real external storage device and I am very happy. It runs very smoothly, backs up my computer quickly, and has room for all my school work, imported materials, edited materials, and final projects. I've read reports of lost backups, but I haven't had any crashing or data loss issues. One of the main reasons I bought the rugged mini player was because I'm a college student and knew I would be carrying it around a lot. The size is no bigger than my iPhone and I haven't noticed any damage from the few drops it's taken since I bought it (about 5.3ft in the last 4 months). Another benefit of this external hard drive is that it's macOS compatible (a feature I've noticed on other products is missing for some reason - mine is currently running 10.12 Sierra). If I run out of disk space again, I will. Highly recommended. I will post any updates if I run into any problems in the future.
