I grew up sharpening my knives at the bottom of a ceramic bowl and have done so for at least 60 years. Everyone thought that was the funniest. Mind you, they brought me their knives to sharpen, and whenever I went somewhere and cooked a new one, I took my own knives with me. As it turned out recently, I needed to sharpen a two-bladed hatchet and ax. I suspect it might be a bowl, but I settled on a file and stone. I used this on an ax and it worked great. But my knives! I can cut jalapenos and onions so thin you can read a newspaper in them. Great stone, I like the nylon case. If I had known I would like the stone so much, I would have bought a leather case!
