It comes with two AAA batteries so it's ready to use. It works by pressing the power button and then the temperature button. They aim at your forehead and wait for the beep. It only takes a few seconds. The temperature is displayed immediately. For me, I found that it gave me different measurements when I was an inch or two further away, so you really need to keep it at just the right distance or you'll get an inaccurate measurement. This is color-coded for your temperature level, so high temperatures are shown in red, low temperatures in orange, and no temperatures in green. You read "Lo". There is also a memory function to view previous temperature readings.
