Ok I'm *not* a Vine reviewer so I paid full price for this toaster after searching too long and reading too many reviews. here on Raven. My wife and I were trying to replace the Kenwood toaster we bought when we got married over 32 years ago. That's right, Kenwood lasted 32 years. Reading the reviews, it seemed like that kind of value just wasn't available anymore, even if you're willing to shell out a few hundred bucks every morning to darken your bread. We went back and forth, carefully identifying and avoiding devices with strange names and a dozen or so reviews written by seemingly sponsored people. To be honest, the Vine reviews for this device were a bit too enthusiastic for our liking, but in the end this Black and Decker turned out to be the smartest choice for us. Now that we've been using it for a few weeks, I can say I'm happy with the solution. It's just as stylish in real life as it is in the photos, but maybe a little cheaper and more plastic than I expected. Not cheap at $12, but maybe not as much real metal as you'd like for $36. It's the perfect size for a dual slot toaster and can handle both large loaves and bagels - it has the signature wire cage that centers the toast and a handle that can be pulled up to lift it after toasting. It has defrost and bagel buttons that glow a nice bright blue, as well as a cancel button built into the beautifully designed main slide switch. Most importantly, it roasts quickly and evenly with a wide range of darkening. Set it to 4 (out of 7) and you'll get a thoroughly toasted, slightly dark, crispy yet juicy result. 3.5 gives an average toast as you would expect. Toasting a second pair of slices in a row seems to give lighter results, but as we use it day in and day out it seems to get more consistent. with a half. And I mean intense β so much so that we had to take it to the garage while I turned it on repeatedly throughout the day to burn off that smell. It also had an extremely toxic odor - it lingered in my nostrils for hours. Luckily it blew up after a day and a half. Another negative is that it gets hot, even with a plastic lid. But despite that, I haven't burned myself yet and haven't even noticed the heat with regular use. The third downside is that it only has two rubber feet on the bottom so it slides too easily. I honestly can't figure it out. There are two beautifully designed rubber pads on the front - was it too expensive to add a pair on the back? Fourth note: the tip seems to be for collecting breadcrumbs. I think most will probably fall into the tray but we eat a lot of grainy bread with lots of seeds and I can already see them from above. I think we need to plan for regular cleaning. Finally, given the heat generated, I expect the plastic on top to discolor fairly quickly. Yes of course they have come a long way with plastic surgery but some things are given in life; this thing will eventually be covered with a yellow patina. Especially if it takes 32 years! Come back to 2049 and I'll do my best to update this review, I promise. But until then I think it's a good choice and I'm completely happy with the purchase.
