I read the reviews on this and many other models before buying and the fact is that there isn't one that someone for some reason doesn't like. I've used a high-speed side-opening model in the past that gradually stopped working properly after a relatively short period of time. My daughter has the same device and it continues to work perfectly. I suspect the quality control isn't at all what we had in the good old mythical days. You can always get a lemon, but that's why they have returns. Also, read the description carefully so you know what you're getting and take reviews with caution. My only two negative observations. Some jars do not stay attached when the opening cycle is complete, and. cover cut. maybe a little rough. Also, I like to stow my hand opener back in the drawer in case of a future blackout or the apocalypse.
