Our son told us about this beastly "water hole". He has three large dogs and a cat. He got the 2 gallon version. We have a large dog and two small cats so we got the 1 gallon version. The first negative: Our son had to help us build this device as the instructions were not written for normal people. lol Cons: (not that bad) Take a bigger size than you think you'll need. While 1 gallon works almost perfectly for us, I don't want the water to go below the inlet area so I have to add water at least 3-4 times a day to keep the water level above the inlet. (Water is sucked into the inlet. It is pumped to the top of the unit and falls like a waterfall.) I had no idea how much water our animals drink each day. Before this device, we had a large water bottle upside down in a drinking bowl, and when they drank the water, the bottle would refill it, much like an office/company bottled water block. Because we live in Arizona and have mosquitoes, we can't use this old system in spring or summer. (We found that mosquitoes lay their eggs in still water, larvae swim around, and mosquitoes fly around!) So we needed a "fresh" water system with a filter, not standing water, and voila! This waterfall, a watering hole, began to live in our house. My only wish is that I could send it back and buy a 2 gallon unit. disappointed with this machine. Just make sure you buy a larger block than you think you'll need. And by the way, it's not loud in any way, shape or form. We have an open floor plan - living room, dining room and kitchen are all one large open space. We don't hear it in any of our rooms. By all accounts, it's not a loud gurgle at all. You can adjust the speed of the waterfall (noise), so have fun! Just go to the panel and buy a large unit. You will not regret it.
