Review on πŸ’ͺ SSD7101A-1 High Point NVMe RAID Controller: Enhancing Performance by Tim Pulse

Revainrating 5 out of 5

SSD7101A-1 is the best M.2 RAID card on the market

The SSD7101A-1 is, in my opinion, the best M.2 RAID card on the market. I mainly use this as a workspace for rendering projects. This proved to be a great investment and a significantly reduced production time. In numerous benchmarks with the Samsung 970 EVO, I repeatedly documented values in the range of 13,000 MB/s. Real world usage is incredible - it's amazing how fast this card performs at this price point. I should add that the card also works with Kingston drives and probably all other NVMe drives currently available - they are not limited to Samsung. Some may be confused by the hype/marketing put out for this controller (it doesn't include an SSD like the rSSD versions). Also, the card is not bootable. It is intended for high-performance applications, not to support the system's boot drive. To be honest, that kind of speed would be wasted on something so simple. A single built-in NVMe drive or even a SATA SSD would be the best option for booting the OS. One thing to watch out for is the need to have 16 lanes available for maximum performance. You need a system/motherboard capable of reserving 16 lanes just for that card or you'll slow down significantly. Don't worry if you're not doing housework - the included RAID software provides an easy way to check whether you're connected to an x16 slot or not.
