I didn't really know how to use it other than to hold my coals but it turned out to be very useful for a few different things. It can be used with either an up or down cone, giving you a more or less indirect grilling surface. If you make it cone-down like a dish, you can hold a TON of coals for a higher heat/longer burn. You can place it anywhere in the kettle as it is completely self-contained. The upward-facing cone allows you to really focus the heat on the grill if you want to too. It seems extremely durable but the edges are sharp. I took the edges with a file and smoothed them out. It holds up to the elements and still looks clean and shiny after a few months and the steel has started to turn blue from the heat. ZERO rust as I would expect from stainless steel.
