Review on C. Crane CC Pocket AM FM and NOAA Weather Radio: A Versatile Clock and Sleep Timer Companion by Nathan Vaughn

Nice but I prefer the Sangean 800

I bought the Sangean 800 DT at the same time because I couldn't decide based on the reviews. If you have a Prime then that's a good idea as these two radios are very close together and what's important to me might not be important to you. The most important feature for me was the quality of the FM stereo sound in the headphones. For $60+ it should sound good. Sangean wins by far. The sound is much wider and richer, and the bass boost is like yesterday's volume toggle. CC Pocket's sound is very narrow and boring. CC Pocket sounds great until you try Sangean. I tested with over-ear headphones. The volume control on the CC Pocket isn't as handy as the buttons on the Sangean, especially if you're walking the dog with the radio in your pocket. More than once I've probably been deaf for years because I banged the little volume wheel and made myself momentarily deaf. The Sangean keys are much better. In my area, the CC Pocket handled NOAA stations better, but it's not a big deal here in the Pacific Northwest. The Sangean is slightly larger and heavier and appears to be a higher quality product. The Sangean runs on rechargeable batteries that can be charged directly in the radio using the supplied charger. That's convenient. The Sangean display is better and easier to read in all conditions. The Sangean's scan/search buttons are also easier to use. In CC Pocket, pressing two buttons to access deeper functions is easier than the Sangean method where you have to enter the "menu" system first. However, Sangean has a soft mute feature that has worked on some channels (not all). Note that sensitivity and selectivity are not mentioned here. I had no problems with any of the radios being powerful enough for comfortable listening.

Pros
  • Great overall specs
Cons
  • Sad packaging
