I have one of these IKEA Kallax 2 x 4 shelving units next to my desk. I also have a splinter behind these shelves. I used to just run an extension cord through one of the shelves to plug it in, but that was painful and took up a portion of the shelf I could use. That's when I got the idea to just attach it to the shelf itself! Voila, easy access to the cord with a detachable extension cord (in case I need it). The handle is strong enough to pull the plug out of the socket. I'm pretty sure I'll need a pry bar to - actually - take it off, but I'm fine with that.
