We upgraded our 80 lb Akita pup to a spiked collar. The switch helped us reset our training and we made great progress (treat training didn't work so well with a dominant breed that wasn't motivated by food). We never use more pressure than a finger swipe. The "bump" on the collar is all we need to signal our pup to pay attention, in sync with our verbal command in the training exercise. I expect this signal to transition to a traditional or martingale collar in a few months. Conversely, 30 years ago I was taught to train with a choke/slip collar. I don't like this device. It feels hard and can hurt the dog. The collar with teeth ensures even pressure and does not cause pain. There is only one other signal that our dog has learned works.
