We haven't used this as a backpack yet but it worked great when we were in the car with our cat. The way it opens allows him to sit and look out the window and/or fall asleep on the way. We also took it outside to enjoy the morning at our campsite (see photo on the picnic table); It was his first time camping and he felt safe away from the dogs! He didn't seem to care about the mesh, which was an issue, and it seemed like a pretty durable material. Would recommend and will try to use the backpack on our next hiking adventure in a month to test the comfort and carrying of our heavy cat.
