Review on πŸ”§ Effortless and Precision In-Line Flaring with CTA Tools 9212 SAE Flaring Tool Kit by Sean Bond

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Better than paying nothing or a lot more

I can't bring myself to give this tool four stars, but three isn't enough. It's more like three and a half stars. This thing is cumbersome to use, especially for the first few flashes. After two flashes I figured out how to make decent ones but they never come out 100%. I run with a 3/16" brake pipe. The sealing surface was too small for the EZ Bend. I followed the instructions using the insert flange thickness as a guide for the depth of the pipe boss. For steel pipe, that depth is probably correct. I had to make one out of steel and the rest was EZ Bend which should stick out a little more (I use the underside of the bevel on the pipe after deburring).Without the extra burr the EZ Bend line doesn't have enough internal surface. One made by me Steel flare came out too tight on the ID, pinching the die insert While the EZ Bend probably doesn't need to be compressed that much, the tool will need to be fully tightened in order for the clamp to thread on Tubing slips The steel tubing is badly damaged, but doable, and I doubt this tool can handle stainless steel. Sometimes the bells are rough. The sealing surface is always smooth, but the back and outer edge may be rough (don't know why). I think this tool can be used on a car but it's quite bulky as it's outdoors. I did a flare on the car and it came out just as good as the others but this thing still needs plenty of room to play around with the setup and then hold it with both hands and wrenches. Speaking of space, you need a good length. straight tube when flared. My flare nuts are about 1/2"/13mm long or maybe a bit longer. Then you will need about 25mm of tubing for the tool and lip. Short ends need to be made before bending. I lubricated the threads with WD40 Silicone lube on the threads and brake fluid on the insert and bolt face I haven't had any issues but I would only use brake lube for now as it gets into everything anyway.

Pros
  • An absolute legend
Cons
  • Not as thick as other picks
