Review on UST Compass Backpacking Emergency Survival by Jonathan Ulsth

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Pros: price, adjustable body, basic functionality Cons.

Pros: Price, adjustable body, basic functionality Cons: Needle occasionally breaks from the jeweled bearing it sits on, no tilt adjustment, no scope/mirror. is really the main compass. If that's all you need, this is a good product. However, my needle fell out of the jeweled bearing (aka the piece of metal in the center of the needle where the needle sits). This would result in the needle remaining stationary and not pointing to magnetic north. It caused some confusion the first time, but a hard tap on the compass and it all fell into place. However, it's a little frustrating. While the compass gives you the functionality you need, it doesn't set declination (adjusted for the difference between magnetic north and true north) and doesn't have the convenience of aiming. I wanted both, especially the first, and regret not upgrading.

Pros
  • RELIABLE: Extended clear baseplate for improved map reading
Cons
  • Not sure
