Passed the magnet test so it's definitely real steel boning, BUT, if you actually intend to lace a the corset tightly and wear it for more than an hour or so there are a few structural problems.The boning holds up, yes, but those 6 big, decorative looking clasps you see on the front (2 rows of 3 with the chains stretched between them) are the only front closures, and that front mid section between them is actually a detachable panel. If you're trying to get it to it by yourself it gets a bit difficult as the clasps are very loose and swing unhitched very easily, so by the time you get one done you've accidentally unhooked another, and if you've got any kind of pudge or squishiness to the front of you -like me- it gives you that stuffed sausage effect if your try to lace it tightly as the corset gaps out in the very large couple of inches of space between each hook. This corset would be great if those clasps were actually decoration with a long row of the more typical hooks hiding behind one, singular front opening.It really does look awesome. I love the added detail of the side lacing, and as I said, it is real steal and very sturdy -no bending or buckling even for a curvey girl like me after 9 hours straight of wearing it while walking around a Ren Fair- it just needs a better front closure set up. I'm definitely hanging on to it and will wear it again, I'm just probably going to stitch the panel int he front to the rest of it where it clasps on one side and sew in a row of hook closures underneath the other so I don't have to rely on the super cute but ineffective big brass clasps.
