Building fun with innovative technology

Very satisfied with this set. Got it as a (42nd) birthday present and set it up in three evenings. It took about four hours total, although I could probably cut that time in half if my kids didn't "help" as much. I have a feeling the Lego Architecture series was a success, but this set and the White House are prime examples. In general, the model looks great. I just have a lot of respect for designers. The rotunda itself is stunning and I love how they designed the rows of columns at the entrance. Most of the exterior walls are built with 1x1 corner bricks, some face inwards, forming rows of square windows, others face outwards, suggesting arches and round windows. The floor under the rotunda decorates the interior, including a circle of statues that can be seen by removing the rotunda; nice little touch. The finished model is very impressive: 18 inches wide, about 8 inches high. A comment and a suggestion. First, my only complaint is that the back of the model doesn't have the same level of detail as the front and sides. Too bad because a real main building has some unique features on the front and back and I want the designer to do both. I'm sure it was a cost-saving decision to keep the price and part count down, but it's a shame the model isn't equally detailed from all angles. And a suggestion: unlike some of the larger Lego projects, the bags in this set are not numbered. It's a shame, because it feels really good to open one bag at a time and only deal with the parts that are needed in the next few steps. So before you start, grab some bowls and a baking sheet, open all the bags and sort the non-white pieces by color, sort the ocean of blue pieces by size and type. It will definitely turn into less frustration pay off the work.

Pros
  • Impressive
Cons
  • boring packaging
