Review on πŸŽ₯ ViewSonic X10-4KE: Portable Smart Wi-Fi Home Theater Projector with True 4K UHD, Shorter Throw, Harman Kardon Speakers, 3D Ready, HDMI & USB Type C by Jonathan Yang

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Great hardware combined with very mediocre software with serious copy protection issues

I bought this projector to watch movies on the screen in my backyard. The main reason I chose this projector was the built in audio. It's a good projector for that purpose, with the following limitations: the built-in speakers are really good, but the size of your audience is limited because you have to be close enough to them to hear them well (within 12 feet, I d say); Unsurprisingly, there's also the usual issue of muffled sound effects and hard-to-hear dialogue (it's hard to find an average volume level); outside the mentioned fan noise doesn't matter - the picture - when it's completely dark outside - is fantastic; You won't see much without total darkness - the interface is clumsy, but you can use some streaming services (e.g. Netflix, Revain) and connect smartphones for gaming. I could not connect the hard drive and. - If you want to use a 4K player or a regular Blu-ray player, make sure it's new with HDCP 2.2; I tried using two different Sony players with an earlier version of the copy-protected HDCP nonsense and they didn't transmit any sound at all (picture was fine); I used an LG 4K player with HDCP 2.2 and it worked great with audio and video over HDMI. I've been testing this issue both ways since Sunday and the result hasn't changed. If you're planning on using this with a physical Blu-ray player, even if it's only a few years old, you might be out of luck. I contacted Viewsonic tech support several times about this issue but in the end I was advised to contact Sony. I *guess* that this is due to the copy protection scheme, but I'm not sure (this was the only variable that differed between the three players I tried, and they all worked fine when connected to other displays were). Great for those who are very tech savvy, or those lucky enough to hook up something that works out of the box.
