The documentation says there is no on/off. But there is. The switch on the side that says "Hold" does it. Also, if you follow the instructions to delete a message, the message will play 10 times before being deleted. (I don't understand why anyone would want THIS to happen.) But if you just hit the delete button twice in a row while a message is playing, the message will be deleted immediately. This procedure is not documented in the instructions. Many thanks to the other authors who provided this information. This model does not have computer software, USB, etc. to support audio transmission. The only way to electronically transfer these audio files is through the speaker/audio-out jack. (and something like Windows Sound Recorder and a microphone jack on the back of the PC). You'll have to shell out another forty grand or so to get a model that offers real support. It also has a jack for an external microphone. I found the recording quality and playback volume satisfactory. The product has been slightly revised. Basic operations/buttons and display screens are not as easy as they could be. This device costs $30, so I expected and wanted something very simple. It took a bit of reading/learning the manual (and reading the reviews here on Revain) to get my bearings. And there are other functional excesses. I didn't need four save folders (or a way to transfer files between them), an alarm clock (and a way to select a message for an alarm), the ability to go back and past past messages, the ability to append entries to existing messages and the like doesn't work. All these things just unnecessarily complicate the device/screens/menus IMHO. The device should turn off automatically when not in use (and not set to record voice), but it doesn't. You need to toggle that "Hold" switch. But it looks like it does the main job satisfactorily (given the issues mentioned above), so I can recommend it. I had a few) and replaced them with a Sony ICD-PX312 Digital Flash Voice Recorder. The main reason is that the PX312 makes it very easy to store audio files on your hard drive. It has an A-mini USB jack on the side so I can use a retractable Zip-Linq USB-A-mini USB cable to connect it to my computer. The PX312 then appears on my computer as a plug-n-play flash drive, no software drivers are required. I can then just copy all the audio files from it to my computer. The PX312 saves audio files in MP3 format, so no file conversion is required. Cute! The price of the PX312 dropped as the end of production neared, so they cost me no more than I paid for the ICD-B600 a few years ago. Now the ICD-B600 is being sold on eBay. and I upgraded about twenty pieces per unit. Double sweetness! The PX312 has plenty of storage space and even supports an M2 MicroSD card for expansion. Oh, and the "hold" issue has been fixed. There is now a Hold/On/Off switch. I just completely ignore the hold function. I don't have to deal with the "delete" issue either, as I can delete files directly when the PX312 is connected to my computer via USB. Unfortunately the PX312 is still too overwhelmed with many useless and complicated functions and buttons that I just ignore.
