Ok, so I use reviews like crazy and I researched the crap out of backpacks (of everything, honestly) before I bought this. I already have a backpack for school, but not only am I a student, I am also a medical professional. My school backpack is great for its purpose, but not so for other needs. I wanted a backpack I can use to travel (my husband and I travel often in and out of the US, by air, cruise, etc. What I was looking for:Room for a cosmetic bag, a change of clothes including tennis shoes, an iPad, cell phone, basic medical necessities like some bandaids, Benadryl, chapstick, also pens and pencils, space for a book or two, and maybe a coloring book and pens. I will be using it to take my lunch and what not to the hospital for shifts and for travel as a carry-on.This back pack is great! To address the very front, quick access pocket. yes, the pocket is only have the depth of the total pack and I can see the potential for it making the pack top heavy, if it’s full and the main compartment is not. I’m not worried about that. It is what it is. That compartment for me (1st pick) is great for quick access to my phone, passport, iPod, travel meds, etc. I won’t be carrying those things with the pack empty. I like that, if need be, I can unzip it so it opens wide. The middle pocket is great! Part of what I love about it is that, because that little, front quick access pocket doesn’t go all the way down, I can put more in the bottom of my pack! Yay! Perfect for a pair of tennis shoes , a jacket, towel, or whatever that gives a nice "base” to set the pack upright. It’s deep enough and wide enough that I can fit plenty. IF I need more than what this pack can carry, I need to be using a different style bag.I love that the laptop pocket is small and incorporated into the main big pocket. I won’t be using this pack for my laptop. I have my other one for that which is carefully and specifically designed for a laptop and not for extra clothes and shoes and things. This is why I bought this backpack! The laptop slot is great for passport, iPad, coloring book, atlas, and/or reading book, while keeping my clothes separate. Just note: this is NOT a "laptop” backpack. It can carry a small one if need be, but does not provide the safety and security for extensive travel with a laptop.Lastly, this bag is lightweight and has excellent stretchy pockets on each side for my coffee mug and a water bottle! Hooray!Durability: I just received this, but I have never been let down by Northface gear.I hope this review is helpful to someone else! This could be an ok school backpack, but won’t withstand the strain and wear of textbooks, a laptop, and notebooks. Look for a heavier, more padded, electronically focused design if that’s your interest.
