Review on Pertronix D651701 Flame Thrower Distributor Cylinder by Dawson Schmidt

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Cold start but shuts off when hot.

So these devices are good but in a marine environment they need to be replaced every year as there is so much energy in this system that you will soon be building "green mountains" on the contacts become period time. They're not cheap and some people hate hall effect ignition systems, but I'm a big fan of them. My symptoms on the Crusader 454 were as follows: The port side engine started and ran for exactly 30-40 minutes and then started backfiring and stalling and would NOT start again until it cooled. I had the best mechanics racking their brains because the lid and rotor contacts weren't that bad. Or so they thought. I cleaned the contacts and ran for about 45 minutes. Keep in mind the cap and rotor were less than 2 years old so yes I had to replace them but I figured they would at least work. Fixed lid and rotor and "overheating" issues. I never believed that such a small amount of corrosion on the contacts would lead to such a result. The moral of the story is that each season a new canopy and rotor is pushed forward. I'm waiting for them to go on sale and buy. Pertronix works well overall. Don't listen to all the negativity.
