Great mid-range GPS

I've had this GPS for about a week now after using other brands. This is a great mid-range device at a good price from Amazon that offers many features previously only available on more expensive devices. There are many small improvements over previous models that aren't obvious until you start using them. It quickly picks up satellite signals and is very responsive to the user interface (e.g. when changing menus or searching for an address). The navigation display shows more information, e.g. B. the next turning road and speed limit, and the image will be updated smoothly. and not jerky like I've seen on other models. The text-to-speech feature is more than good enough. The voice is kind of robotic and some street names aren't pronounced correctly but that's all clear, in some reviews I read comments that the voice isn't loud enough but I have no problems (in fact I set the volume to 70% ). I think the Magellan is probably the best in the department, but this Garmin more than suffices. Directions are as good and detailed as you'd expect from Garmin and less intrusive than some other brands. For example, turn-by-turn directions are only given twice: once when you're quite far away, and the second time when you're almost at the intersection. Some other units "saw" you multiple times as if you weren't paying attention. For me, the visual representation combined with this level of verbal guidance is exactly what I need. Two things I would have wished for, but unfortunately these features are only found on more expensive Garmin devices: a) The mini-USB plug goes into the back of the device, not the mount, so you have to unplug it every time you wants to take the GPS off. b) This model does not support multi-destination route optimization, so you need to program by yourself when driving to multiple destinations. It also lacks Bluetooth and MP3, but that's not a problem for me. One accessory I would recommend is the Garmin Friction Pad: http://www.amazon. com/Garmin-Portable-Dashboard-StreetPilot-Navigators/dp/B000LRMS66/ref=pd_bxgy_e_img_b. This allows the GPS to be securely placed on the dashboard instead of being attached to the windshield (which sometimes leaves a residual ring on the glass and is a reason for theft). There are other brands of this type of bar, but I like Garmin's for its smaller size and design (mount included). Amazon has one of the best prices I've ever found. Finally, I bought this Garmin in early October 2008 and it came with 2009 maps preloaded. One update problem less. that I have ever found.
