I replaced an apple slicer with this at the Dollar Store and it's been day and night. I always have a feeling I'll cut my fingers off with the dollar store version - dangerously flimsy - but this OXO, like most OXO products, stands out in its own unique way, even if it looks the same. When you peel off the blade it leaves a tiny strip of skin, so it keeps its star shape if you want to keep it that way. The most important characteristics of this product are the sharpness / precision of the blade, the durability of the blade. the rest is attached to the plastic and if it cuts through. It passes the test on all 3, so cut up an apple, toss the slices into a bowl, drizzle with some lemon juice and enjoy a far healthier snack than anything you'll find in a packet. (I also like OXO bottles for storing lemon juice in the fridge.)
