Easy to build - very extensible - with a Raspberry Pi it's really great for learning

This is a great STEM robotics kit for beginners if you're interested in learning in a standard language like Python instead in proprietary block languages that many other sets use. The best part for me was that most of the Pi's GPIO ports were open, making it easy for the robot to add more functionality. You'll see in my photos that I added headlights, taillights, and even a very simple robotic arm using cheap off-the-shelf electronics. I liked it so much I even used it as an assignment in a class I teach. and created a youtube video showing advanced self-driving features that I programmed. Search Freenove on YouTube and you can probably find my video. Yes, you'll need to add a Raspberry Pi and a few Li-ion batteries to complete this kit, but at this price point I think it's a wonderful little robot. I modified their code to use the mini keyboard as a game controller to control the robot and turn on different drive modes, turn headlights on and off, honk the horn and even control the robot arm. Therefore, there is no need to log into the pi and start the server - the server is started by a cron job when the pi boots up and is ready to be managed.

Pros
  • Robust construction
Cons
  • Almost everything is ok
