What you see is what you get: a USB adapter that plugs into your PC and then into whatever you want to connect it to. I've used RCA and S-Video connections and they all worked fine. You need the included software to use it as a computer which I didn't know what to do with the device when it was plugged in prior to installing the software. The software is clearly quite old judging by its "Windows XP" aesthetic, but it worked on both my desktop and laptop, both running Windows 10, and takes up little RAM - I assume that even a cheap netbook can do this without any problems. Plug the device into your existing VCR (or pretty much any device with an RCA output, it doesn't matter) and it starts feeding right away, allowing you to switch between devices as needed. The quality of the recorded media is very similar to what you see. As far as I can tell, the preview window can't be resized, so it's not optimal to use it for watching your old movies, but the output files can be resized in other players. Once you've played through a video to capture it (ironically similar to a VCR), most video players (including Windows Media Player and VLC of course) can read the uncompressed MPG file they output and the quality of the video looks spot on like the VHS tapes I looked at. I was afraid that there might be some kind of compression, static or other noise generated by the device itself, but that wasn't the case at all. The same goes for sound: whatever the VCR (or other device) outputs is what the device picks up in true stereo. Although slightly different, 10 minutes of video was roughly 500MB of storage space in its original format. So keep that in mind if you plan on keeping all your original MPG files or converting them to a more compact format using a pretty video editor of any kind. In general, it does what it says and does it well. If I had to find fault, the USB device itself is made out of somewhat brittle plastic, I doubt it will last long given day-to-day use, but if you're going to do it you'd probably want something more functional and with longer ones Cable. However, this was outstanding value for me, and if you have a bunch of old VHS tapes that you want to turn into files on your PC that you can easily download, share and store, this is the ticket to get it. fast and professional.
