Winters in Maine can be very frigid. I used to wear "tractors" on my hiking boots to walk my dog, but my very sensitive feet hurt from the extra pressure of wearing them. So I researched to find the best shoe sole for traction on shiny ice, snow on ice and mud and found that the "Vibram Artic Grip" outsole was among the top three aggressive ice soles and that Merrill has shoes with those attributes . soles. I usually wear a 10th width to accommodate liners and thermal socks but the wides were not available. I am very happy to report that this shoe fits great after only a few wears. And I'm very happy with the Vibram Artic outsole, it really grips ice, at least on the icy road, pavement and road. Haven't tried them on a frozen body on water or wet ice. For my winter weather that can last 4 months or more this shoe is definitely worth the investment! Okay I've only had these shoes for two years and only wear them in the winter about 4-5 months a year and both shoes have holes on the sides so are no longer waterproof. I'm so disappointed and reconsidering the $130.00 investment even though I'm a real fan of arctic grip soles. I will look at other shoe manufacturers that use arctic soles.
