Works perfectly; But the driver is difficult to find. Also: requires a power cord.

The instructions that came with it were generic so they just said to go to their website to get the driver. I've kept clicking every link that says "USB" but none of them lead to the driver for this card. I finally found it under "I/O Maps". It makes sense when you think about it, but it's a USB expansion card, after all. Anyway, installing the driver wasn't quick, but it worked the first time, which isn't always the case with things like this. Like the hard drive, the card has a 15-pin SATA power connector. It will work without it if you're connecting devices that don't require power (e.g. self-powered external hard drives), but if you want 5V at 2A on those connectors you need this cable. In terms of performance, it's great. It outperforms the USB 3.0 ports on the motherboard, which I don't quite understand. But since there are only three blue connectors on the mainboard, I wanted more. I checked out the layout and quality of the components and was impressed. You seem to have got everything right (over the years I've designed many high-speed data transfer devices). I had no problem letting the operating system know that something was plugged into one of these ports. There are 7 ports in total. : 6 backwards and one inwards. The external ports are oriented so that the Type A connector fits into the slotted hole in the chassis from the side. Luckily that wasn't a problem for me, but you should check first. The plastic part should not fit; metal case only. Conclusion: 5 stars for the performance, minus one for the bad documentation.

Pros
  • Two USB 3.0 Type-A ports. Data transfer rate up to 5 Gbit/s.
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
