We started when our rat cage was designed for babies and was too big to use properly. The one we upgraded to 2' x 3' was the perfect match and became a roosting place for our two rats (preferably over a fleece lined box, their old favorite fleece pouch and a cozy hanging tube of fluffy stuff) . Access to the main compartment is good for her but admittedly a bit drafty for her with four corner vents. So they decided to gnaw a hole in the top layer and sleep between the faux fur upper and the waterproof, patterned fabric on the inside. It washes very well and they don't try to eat faux fur or anything like that. I buy a second one.
