Take notes in the book, go over the directions, and practice on the cat (well done one of the authors). Read ALL of the earlier comments. The comments contain some really helpful advice. I won't say it again. Examine the battery's operation in various modes. As there is nothing that can be done about micro flashes draining a charge during measurements, get used to it. securing the body to the lid (only a micro-hole with a cord). Handle the optics with caution (dust, fingers) and cover the lens. Wearing the gadget on your tummy or letting it dangle out is not recommended. Best wishes.
