I've been using Frontier Phone since 2010 to access the Internet through a DSL modem. We live in a remote area of California where there is no cable TV, so we have to rely on video streaming and satellite TV for home entertainment. I use the Internet for my business, communication with customers and banking. Sometimes I need to send large files to clients over the internet. With our internet service, Frontier advertises a maximum bandwidth of just over 6 kbps, which is quite often available. However, my test software regularly recorded speeds of less than 0.5 kbps, which does not support video streaming. At times I've experienced such slow speeds and restarted my old modem and immediately got acceptable internet speeds, sometimes approaching 6K in my testing. I bought this new Motorola DSL modem because I found that the old modem didn't support the new internet security protocols (long-term encryption technology) and because I don't trust the old modem's firmware. When trying to log into Frontier I ran into a problem because they use the user's address on their 34 character system and my modem software only allowed me to enter 31 characters. I contacted Motorola and explained my problem on Saturday and received an email confirmation on Monday. On Tuesday they sent me an address to get new firmware for my modem. I installed new firmware and now my modem works fine. Right now I'm experiencing download speeds of around 5.9 KB/s, which is fine with me. Now I know that some people with cable modems would be shocked at these speeds because they are used to living in an area where really high speed networks are common; but here in little ol' Shingletown, California, it's great.
