The hardest lead hardly leaves any marks on salted wood.
Works mostly with salt treated wood to leave heavy marks when cutting/trimming wood. These pencils must be the hardest lead (3/4) and should not be used to mark wood. I suspect it will work well if you use it on light colored hardwood, maybe softer pine (untreated). These pens just don't suit me. On the other hand, the sharpener worked well and made a pencil point. Whether your pencils are oblong or round, a sharpener works well.
