We have many QNAP storage devices used for local backups and they are very reliable. We bought this device to store some remote backups and I regret that purchase. All I wanted from this device was two open folders (no credentials) for BackupExec to write backup files. It turns out there's no way to create folders that aren't publicly accessible; Access to any location on the device must be done with credentials. To make matters worse, there is no JBOD setting for disks, so you MUST create a RAID group (thus wasting disk space). For a device with 2 hard drives, this is very restrictive. Even after calling their tech support I couldn't set up the folder the way I wanted (they said this machine can't be set up with open folders). Crazy. For perspective, I installed 50 similar 2-disk Netgear devices with no issues. The installation is completed in about 5 minutes. I would definitely avoid this device if all you want is file storage. The settings are too complicated for a basic setup, and QNAP technical support seems unfamiliar with the product.
