HORI performs best on Wii U

*This review assumes you are most interested in this Super Smash Bros. controller. First, let me say that I've never been a fan of third-party developers. anything. SPECIAL controllers. I've had all the first batch controllers of every Nintendo home console since the N64 (N64, GCN, Wavebird, Wii Remote, Nunchuk, Wii Classic Controller, Wii Remote Plus, Wii Classic Controller Pro, Wii U Gamepad, Wii U Pro Controller) and I have used several third party controllers (GCN, Wii Remote, Nunchuk, Wii Remote Plus, Wii Classic Controller). Years of Nintendo enthusiasts have taught me one rule when buying controllers: official Nintendo controllers ALWAYS fit. You want to go. Is always. So far. This controller is breaking the rules. I am delighted with this product. HORI has quickly become my go-to controller option (surprisingly, I can say that with four classic GCN wired controllers, four Super Smash Bros. GCN controllers, four Wavebirds, and an official Nintendo adapter). My personal pros and cons. Advantages. If you haven't heard, it's a Gamecube-style controller that works like a Wii Classic controller. You stick it in the Wii Remote and voila - Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart and hundreds of great classic games are now at your fingertips. A high quality Gamecube controller that works like a classic controller. Essentially, this gives you access to a Gamecube controller for any game on the last two console generations (Wii and Wii U) that support traditional GCN controllers PLUS any game that supports classic controllers, excluding the GCN controller. That alone was a very convincing selling point for me and, together with the great reviews, motivated me to try HORI. I'm glad I did. Speaking of quality, wouldn't it be better for you to buy GCN controllers from Nintendo? For the first time in my life I would say not necessarily. The next remarks I will make will be different from the original GCN controller. I would argue that this controller isn't an attempt at copying it, it's actually an improvement over the first batch GCN controller. Let's start with the feeling. The shape differs slightly from the original. That's not to say it's worse, in my personal opinion it improves on what is already the industry standard for comfortable gaming. (But it is; personal opinion.) It's definitely ergonomic and feels fantastic. Compared to the Classic Controller/Classic Pro Controller, I've always preferred the feel of the Gamecube. Again, this is a personal preference. I personally think this product is great. The L and R buttons have been updated to one-click (non-pressure sensitive) buttons versus the pressure-sensitive buttons in the original. In the Super Smash Bros. series. The L and R buttons normally serve as shield buttons. Super Smash Bros. Melee (GCN) introduced a technique called "Super Shielding" to take advantage of the new pressure-sensitive L and R buttons. The weaker you pressed the button; The slower your shield ended, the more area it covered and the easier it was to break. This feature has been removed in the next version of Super Smash Bros. Brawl (WII) and still missing in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U. This controller reflects that. Also, starting with the Gamecube controller (with the exception of the original Wii Classic controller), ALL NINTENDO CONTROLLERS HAVE ONE-PRESSURE BUTTONS, as opposed to PUSH-SENSITIVE BUTTONS. This means that pressure-sensitive buttons are a mechanism that's in Nintendo's past, not the present. Currently, the sliding L and R buttons only delay the speed at which the button can be pressed, which can be problematic in games like Super Smash Bros. - Large D-pad: I've never been a big fan of the D-pad on the GKN controller. While it's not perfect (I would have preferred a super-dense Nintendo handheld-style D-Pad), it's a very valuable improvement. No entry delay. If you encounter something, you probably have a defective product. NEUTRAL ELEMENTS - Added ZL, Home, + and - buttons to Gamecube controller for classic HORI Battle Pad controller functionality. (The Z button becomes the ZR button, and the START button is removed entirely in favor of HOME/+/-.) Remember, as I've said many times, functionally it's a Wii Classic controller acts. You MUST have a Wii Remote to connect to the console. This creates a half-wired, half-wireless feel. As I said, this functionality is a plus for me, but if you're only buying for Smash and nothing else, this may or may not be a minus for you. CONSAh, here we are. What bad thing could I say after all the enthusiastic praise? There's a pretty serious deal breaker out there for a very small minority of people. If you are a professional gamer in high level games then you would not be looking at this product let alone reading this review as you are only playing with a low level official GCN wired controller. TV resolution. But I have to say it. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT if you are a high level tournament player familiar with the intricacies of the metagame. This. Is. no Per. You. For 99.9% of gamers, this controller is a dream come true. For those who compete in national tournaments, this controller has a very small bug that will ruin your pixel perfect way of metaplay. This disadvantage is called reverse input. Let me stress that for MOST OF HUMANITY this is the controller for you. That's why it won't work for professionals. When you reach the highest game levels, every millisecond counts. Every final move is so calculated and precise that you can't hope to truly master the game for years. original entrance. This can cause your character to turn, rendering him useless to those whose lives are tied to major tournaments. I cannot stress enough that this is NOT as important as it seems. This should NOT stop you from purchasing a product that comes as close to perfection as possible. I say this both as someone who knows Nintendo controllers inside out and as a highly skilled casual gamer who regularly wins various local tournaments in my area. I'm probably a lot closer to serious gamers than you are, and for me it's the controller of all controllers. If my logic is correct, then you too can be a responsible person. If you're not one of those ridiculously gifted people whose life is Smash, good news! Buy this controller. It will bring you a lot of joy and happiness.
