My mice prefer mesh wheels to hard plastic wheels because they can start very quickly, stop suddenly and let the wheel carry them around. I had no issues with feet or tails getting stuck in this wheel. I've read about the dangers of bumblebees, so I bought a 1/4" elastic from a craft store and threaded it through all the holes so the mice wouldn't go straight through the wires, but they can still get a good enough grip to loop the loop. The wheels also had a couple of sharp pieces of mesh sticking out from where it attached to the round frame. It was sharp enough to cut me, so for my mice's safety, I used my hot glue gun to apply a layer of glue around the frame on either side, covering the ends of the wires. Since all the materials are washable, I can soak them in vinegar and soak water to clean them.
