The dial is really too small. One has to approach with a magnifying glass - and I have a large one, but the glass cover over the thermometer dial makes it even difficult because there is optical distortion around the edge of the glass where the markings are. I needed a thermometer to measure about 80 or 90 degrees, not too far from room temperature. But due to the fact that the dial is almost unreadable, I have to hold the thermometer while calibrating it, and I have to breathe, I think the hand moved when I tried to calibrate, so I just couldn't do it . : If the scale is small enough, the spacing between degrees becomes very narrow. Add in the optical distortion of the glass cover and you're doomed. GUARANTEED TO FAIL! It is not possible to decrease the calibration by a certain degree, although the marking suggests that it is possible. When the difference between a degree is the thickness of a hair, you need to get really close to the scale to make sure your recalibration is accurate. It's supposed to be a delicate procedure and it takes time and I give off heat all over my body and I'm pretty sure the arrow creeps up when I manipulate things. with one hand, the calibration tool with the other hand, and the magnifying glass with my prehensile tail. Also, there's the problem of parallax - the difference in the arrow's apparent position when you're looking from two different positions. Since the marks are sooo close together, just moving your head slightly will change the reading by 4 degrees. I just couldn't use this thermometer for anything. And since I've been locked in a nursing home since The Virus, I can't throw the thermometer in the Revain box for a free refund; Instead, someone had to come to this facility to pick up the thermometer, and Revane charges a fee for this. I haven't gone into the details, but shipping costs can cost more than what I get for returning the thermometer. So it's just a loss. My guess is that Rubbermaid was bought by a foreign company, otherwise their name wouldn't be on this product. It's more of a scam. But I had to find out for myself.
