Do not start until you have de-energized the fan, preferably by turning off the fan circuit breaker or turning off the wall switch and securing with tape to prevent it no one accidentally turns it on again. The fan wires in my unit are twisted instead of solid. I think that goes for all fans. However, the key to threading wires into a new switch is that the stranded ends must be either solid or solder tinned, effectively converting the stranded conductor to a solid conductor. This allows you to insert the wire into the switch without bending or crimping the bare wire. The easiest way to achieve this goal with stranded wire is to know that it's already tinned. So you need a thin, pointed object to poke in the hole where each wire goes in the old switch. I used a "cleaning needle" but a straightened paper clip or medium sewing needle should do the trick. The goal is to insert this tool into the hole along with the wire to relieve the pressure on the wire so you can pull it out of the old switch. I transferred a wire from the old switch to the new one. As documented elsewhere here, there are 4 connection names in the old and new switch: L, 1, 2, and 3. The three wires looked like me (white), so I moved them one at a time, starting with the wire. 3, then 2, then 1, then L. There are 4 small holes on the back of the new switch. Wires are NOT plugged into them. Look at the side of the new switch next to one of these holes and you'll see bare metal. Look closely and you will see that there is a small V-shaped indentation in the metal. This is where you plug in the cable. The result is this: the wires go to the switch at an angle. It's easy if you see the indentation and use it as a guide. Much luck! This worked for me.
