Will not work in computer accessories and peripherals

I need to connect an old Dell screen to my new MacBook 12" and was hoping this adapter would help. But it just doesn't work. I don't know , why I love the laptop, but I'm frustrated with all the adapters and various parts needed to connect it to my peripherals and that half of them don't work.
