The lids supplied with these ice trays do not prevent water spills. The silicone bottom makes it easier for the ice cream to come out. One of the ice cream bowls when my daughter got the ice cream out. But I think she banged it on the counter to break the ice. That wasn't necessary because I just snapped them off at the ends with a twist. Any ice cubes that didn't come out I was able to press the bottom of the silicone piece and they popped out immediately.
