This camera replaced my aging SD630 which inexplicably started to have poor focus. I bought the 630 as a front pocket camera (I already have a DSLR so what I'm looking for in point and shoot is small) and was looking for the same when buying a replacement. I've looked at smaller cameras from other manufacturers but the reviews are of mixed quality/satisfaction. I chose the Elph 310 over the 510 because it's physically smaller and I didn't need a touchscreen. It had to be something everyone in my family could use, and the touchscreen camera interface isn't good enough yet. I was pleasantly surprised by the results obtained with this camera. Compared to the 630, this is a significantly better device. The 630 could take good photos outdoors in daylight, but otherwise struggled. 310 works really well in all lighting conditions I've tried so far. It's so good that we've even started just taking it with us when we go outside, leaving the SLR at home. The optical zoom range on this camera is really great. This was a real plus for me. It's nice not to rely on digital zoom just to get closer to the subject. I don't use the digital zoom at all. With a camera that fast, make sure you have a good card. I spent money to get a 45MB/s 32GB Sandisk card and I'm glad I did. I never had to wait for something to be saved. This camera can generate a lot of data when recording in some high-speed and high-definition video modes, so you'll need a card that can handle it. Battery life is good (I took 200 photos without noticing any battery drain). warning), but I'd still recommend a second battery if you plan to use it all day without having to turn it off after each shot to extend battery life. I highly recommend this camera. I'm thrilled and so far I haven't found a feature or aspect of the camera that I'm not happy with.
