This is normal, but be warned! If this fails, your hose will freeze!
I have used this product for two seasons, the first being in November 2015. It broke down during a cold spell that we had in January 2018. . I'd say it's ok, but to be on the safe side, if you're having a real cold spell and you're staying in an RV, your best bet is to open the gray water valve a little and let your water seep away a little safely. The lines in our RV are fine. The hose is frozen despite being insulated with this product. To be honest I don't know the best option, I'm just not sure if it's the best product for my application. Apparently it is only used in the winter months when frost is expected. So durability seems to be an issue.
